Hydrocele Surgery
Closing the channel so scrotal fluid stops reaccumulating.
What is Hydrocele Surgery?
A short groin operation that closes the narrow channel through which abdominal fluid tracks down into the scrotum, and drains the fluid already there.

Why It Is Done
Surgery is advised in these situations. The decision is always made after examining your child, never from a description.
- The hydrocele has persisted beyond about two years of age
- It appeared for the first time in an older child
- It is large, uncomfortable or steadily increasing
- A hernia is present as well, in which case it is repaired without waiting
Before the Day
- Under two years of age, watching is usually the correct treatment — most close on their own
- Needle aspiration is not used in children: the channel is still open, so the fluid simply returns
- Fasting as instructed
During the Operation
- General anaesthetic with a block
- A small groin incision; the channel is tied off and the fluid drained
- Around 30 minutes
Afterwards, and at Home
- Usually home the same evening
- Some scrotal swelling for a week or two, which settles
- Normal school and play in about a week; avoid cycling for two to three weeks
What Can Go Wrong
- Fluid reaccumulating, which is uncommon
- Bruising or swelling of the scrotum
- Wound infection, which is rare
- The same small risks to the cord structures as any groin surgery
Every operation carries risk. These are listed openly because a parent consenting to surgery is entitled to know them — not because they are expected. The surgeon will go through which of them actually apply to your child.
